When I began practicing calligraphy, I have made a rule for myself - as much as I would be impressed by our heritage and tradition- I would refrain from blindly copying it. The road I have taken is certainly a long one, but I have always hated imitations, being fully aware that we build on the shoulders of those who have come before us. As hard as it certainly is (most of the time) - seek your own path.

I also strongly believe that aesthetic framework every calligrapher operates within is what makes the difference, technique of execution aside- what makes your work good is the benchmark (նշաձող) you set for yourself of what it is that you consider beautiful in writing. Set aside anything even with a shadow of falsehood and doubt, everything questionable and keep purifying your work continuously. Remember that your experience will only grow with time, but never lower your standards or fear leaving the comfort zone. The gratification which comes the moment you write something beautiful is worth all the hard work leading to it.
